Bank of England

My View

Bank of England has stated its 2025 growth forecast is now only 0.75 % – half of its November forecast of 1.5 %. They have also cut interest rates by a quarter-point to 4.5 %

“ We now expect GDP growth to be notably weaker in the near term ”

– Andrew Bailey, BoE Governor

This is the 3rd rate-cut in the last 6 months. Now borrowing more money is attractive to consumers, which will most likely increase consumption and investment in the UK but will also increase the demand for homes due to cheaper mortgages. ( Shifting AD rightward, Increasing GDP in the short run ). However this will also weaken £ purchasing power.

Tesla Sales

My View

Due to Elon’s playfulness with Nazi slogans has been seen as toxic by mainstream political parties and as a result, Tesla’s sales have significantly dropped across Europe.

“ I bought this before Elon went crazy ”

– Tesla Owners, to Financial Times

Musk’s political involvement has alienated certain consumer groups, reducing the Tesla brand appeal. Could this lead to a boycott of his products ? This activism may also result in consumers switching over to rival brands as Tesla products are a luxury so their demand is price elastic.

Trump on Gaza

My View

Trump has stated the U.S. will “ take-over ” the Gaza strip. He wants all of the 2.2mn population to settle in Egypt, Jordan and other surrounding countries. Trumps wish is to redesign and develop the land into the “ Riviera of the Middle East ”, creating thousands of jobs. The White House has announced that not a single American troop will be needed as Gaza will be turned over to the U.S. by Israel

“ We’ll do whatever is necessary … we’re going to take over that place ”

– Donald Trump

Democrats are viewing this as an “ ethnic cleansing ”, an injustice and a violation of rights of the Palestinian people. This proposal has outraged the arab world. This extremely right-wing  move clearly demonstrates to the whole world that Trump and America support and stand with Israel. If America privatizes the soon to be Riviera, it could lead to monopolistic power and the development will also create structural employment for higher skilled jobs as well as construction. Could this lead to gentrification ? However the arrival of the Palestinians in Egypt and Jordan may temporarily increase unemployment due to the influx of people, leading to demand-pull inflation

Trumps Tariffs

My View

Similarly to his first campaign back in 2017, Trump , the “ tariff man ” – he calls himself, is reinforcing his classic protectionism tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico and of course China. This shakes both the Canadian and Mexican markets majorly, due to their heavy reliance on the U.S. economy, who will soon both be facing an outright recession if the 25% tariff rate remains. However it has been stated that Trump has put his tariffs on hold for a short 30 day period.

“ A trade war on steroids ”

– Financial Times

He has stated their purpose is to “ generate revenue ”, for the trillions of dollars of tax cuts and to decrease the amount of fentanyl coming into the U.S. However we have seen this dance before, and a trade war will be let loose in North America. It is also forecast to spark inflation for U.S. consumers ( which might force the Federal Reserve to raise interest rate, slowing down investment and consumption ). Firms relying on imports from Canada and Mexico will also be facing major losses as their production cost for goods will skyrocket.

OpenAI

My View

Musk, and a couple other co-investors, put forward a near $ 100 billion bid, for the non-profit that controls OpenAI, on Monday. Sam Altman ( Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI ) retaliated to Musk with a tweet on the social platform ” X “, which has been owned by Musk since 2022.

“ no thank you but we will buy Twitter for $ 9.74 billion if you want ”

– Sam Altman

Even though Musk co-founded it in 2015 and invested tens of millions into the project before leaving the board in 2018, this is a clear rivalry and a little personal to Altman. Elon has also allegedly filed a lawsuit against Altman. If Musk owned OpenAI, this would significantly reduce competition and create a counter to Microsoft’s AI dominance, yet Sam’s strategic tweet ( offering only a tenth of what Elon offered ) signals confidence in himself and his company. Musk’s ownership of the company would have also further solidified the U.S.’s leadership in AI, which could have intensified the AI war currently on going with China and their version ( Deepseek ).
